Arsenal found in home of suspect
By CASEY LOGAN, Daily News Staff Writer
Jeffrey Hutchinson, 35, is charged with the Sept. 11 murders of Renee Flaherty, 32, and her three kids, Geoffrey Dean, 9; Amanda Marie, 6; and Logan Kyle, 4. Among the weapons seized by Okaloosa County lawmen was a Mossberg 12-gauge "Slugster" shotgun, believed to be the murder weapon. According to papers filed in Okaloosa County Circuit Court, Sheriff's investigators confirmed that a 911 call placed the night of the murders came from the Hutchinson home. During that call, a male voice said, "I just killed my family," authorities said. Officers found Hutchinson lying on his back on the garage floor when they arrived at the home at 410 John King Road near Crestview. A white cordless phone was between one of his hands and his head. According to a Sheriff's Office report, Hutchinson told investigators that one or two men in ski-masks entered the home on the night of the murders. He also alluded "to some government operatives that may have been dispatched from Quantico to commit this act." Tuesday, Chief Assistant Public Defender Earl Loveless entered a written plea of not guilty on Hutchinson's behalf. A "not guilty" plea is standard for this point in such court proceedings. Hutchinson was indicted by a grand jury Oct. 5 on four counts of premeditated murder. Assistant State Attorney Bobby Elmore said Tuesday that he would seek the death penalty. During a search of the home Sept. 12-16, investigators seized the Mossberg shotgun, Remington slugs, .22 long rifle ammo, two 9mm handguns made in Iraq, rifle scopes and loaded rifle magazines. In court papers filed Tuesday, Loveless indicated the defense will include Hutchinson's battle with Gulf War syndrome in its case. Hutchinson, an Army Ranger for 12 years, served in the Gulf War and has suffered from vomiting, weight loss and other problems. Loveless has filed a motion that a defense consultant, Dr. William Baumzweiger, be appointed to assist in preparing the case. Baumzweiger is a neurologist/psychiatrist who is an expert in the field of Gulf War syndrome and has previously treated Hutchinson. Hutchinson is being held at the Okaloosa County Jail without bond.
