Voters to Decide Whether to Change Three Strikes Law
California voters will decide whether the scope of the state's three strikes law should be changed.

Under Proposition 66, strict prison sentences of 25 years to life would only apply to violent felons. Supporters of the measure contend that California's prisons are becoming overcrowded with non-violent criminals.

Although the measure would lighten sentences for some offenders, it would toughen others. For instance, the measure would increase time behind bars for child molesters.

The initiative would allow thousands of inmates to get their sentences reduced, which would save the state millions of dollars in prison costs.

Prosecutors, police and prison guards are leading the campaign against Proposition 66. They say the three strikes law has reduced crime in the state by keeping career criminals behind bars.
